1. Hornbeam
The hornbeam is actually a fraud - it is not a beech at all, but a birch plant and therefore much more robust and undemanding than its namesake. It can thrive in the sun as well as in the shade and can even tolerate temporary drought and waterlogging. The green hedge grows up to four meters high and can be cut up to twice a year to keep it in shape. But the beech can also tolerate a cut well, although it then looks a little wilder thanks to its strong growth.
2. ilex
The ilex (also called holly) is a pretty prickly affair. Nevertheless, the evergreen forest plant is ideal as a hedge. The ilex grows best in partially shaded locations with humus-rich soils. There are now even frost-hardy varieties that also thrive in Germany. In summer the hedge is also adorned with red berries, which makes it even more attractive. The slow growth, on the other hand, is both an advantage and a disadvantage of the plant: it only needs one cut a year to stay in shape, but it is also relatively expensive.
3. Loquat
The loquat makes demands on its location, but is given a protected place in the Penumbra in a mild winter region, it turns into a very easy to care for Contemporary. The common loquat can withstand drought and heat and, as a hedge, has evergreen leaves one to two meters high. Variegated leafy varieties such as "Pink Marbel" or "Red Robin" are particularly beautiful, as they make the plant more than just a boring privacy screen. The only disadvantages of the plant are its low frost resistance and susceptibility to fire blight, a notifiable plant disease.
4. Japanese lavender heather
The Japanese lavender heather (also known as shadow bells) is one of the most beautiful types of hedges with its evergreen foliage, dense growth and bell-like flowers. Although it is still rather unknown in Germany, it is ideal for the garden: it is undemanding to the ground, grows slowly and therefore only needs a few cuts, which it does well tolerates. It is also hardy and loses very little leaves. She prefers to have partially shaded to shady locations. The only regular maintenance measures to be mentioned are watering in dry periods and the occasional spreading of a handful of fertilizer.
5. liguster
The privet is a true survivor: it can cope with almost any location and soil. The native shrub is also very robust and you can choose between summer and evergreen varieties. In addition, the privet grows and reproduces very quickly. This can be used by simply propagating the hedge with cuttings instead of buying it expensive in the store. The plant also tolerates radical pruning: As a rule, the privet should be pruned twice a year in order to keep the correct shape. At the same time, its enormous growth also causes problems: runners and dense roots quickly form, which cause problems for other plants.
6. yew
Evergreen, easy on pruning and robust - what more could you want from a hedge plant? The yew is an ideal plant for one to four meter high hedges. She can cope with the sun just as well as with shade and even deeply rooted, not too dry soils are no problem for her. The plant can also tolerate heavy cuts down to the wood without damage. In addition, the yew tree is very durable - with good care, 1000 years are child's play for this hedge. However, the yew tree has one drawback: all parts of its plant are poisonous and can be harmful to health if eaten.
As a privacy screen offer themselves particularly hardy, blooming hedges at. We have put together a list of the best hedges of this type for you.
