Evergreen plants: the 10 best for the garden

Evergreen plants live up to their name and retain their foliage even in winter. Thus, they provide some color in the garden all year round.

If you decide to enrich your garden with an evergreen plant, you don't need to believe that the selection is limited to firs and cypresses. There are many plants that keep their foliage all year round, or at least much of the year. With evergreen shrubs and woody plants, the foliage is constantly renewed and the leaf swap goes almost unnoticed. Thus, they can offer privacy protection, overgrown walls and walls as well as simply represent a beautiful eye-catcher.

The evergreen plants do not replace their old leaves with the new until spring. Semi-evergreen specimens, on the other hand, lose some of their foliage in winter. The rest of the time follows in the spring, when the shoots begin to sprout.

The plants in all three groups are hardy and keep their foliage (almost) all year round.

1. Ivy (Hedera helix)

The evergreen ivy is a very popular climbing plant. It is very robust and grows on almost all soils. Ivy is very suitable for greening walls, railings and fences and offers perfect privacy protection.

2. Knotweed (Persicaria)

With the semi-winter green knotweed you can quickly green large areas. During the growth phase it grows up to 30 cm per day.

3. Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum)

Of the Winter jasmine is semi-winter green and belongs to the olive family. With its bright yellow flowers, it is a real eye-catcher. With a climbing aid, it can grow up well on walls.

4. Honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium)

The evergreen honeysuckle is often used for partitions and greening. It is a good alternative to ivy.

5. Crawler (Euonymus fortunei)

The creeper is an evergreen plant and actually belongs to the ground cover. Some species are also suitable as climbing plants if they are supported with a climbing aid.

6. Bamboo (Bambusoideae)

The bamboo belongs to the evergreen plants and at the same time to the sweet grasses. It is particularly suitable as a decorative privacy screen or as a boundary for the garden pond.

7. Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus)

The evergreen Cherry laurel can reach a height of up to three meters. It has a very dense, fast habit. But be careful: the seeds contained in the fruits are poisonous.

8. Thuja / tree of life

Evergreen thuja hedges are particularly frost-hardy and wind-resistant. They grow very quickly and are completely opaque.

9. Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens)

Of the Boxwood is an ideal evergreen border. Due to its easy malleability, it is also often used to create hedge labyrinths and plant sculptures.

10. Small-leaved evergreen (Vinca minor)

A very popular, evergreen ground cover is the small-leaved evergreen. It is ideal as a decorative underplanting of trees. From March to September it adorns blue-violet or white flowers.
