Chrysanthemums make for a colorful garden even in autumn. We take a closer look at the most beautiful and well-known types of chrysanthemums.
Chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum) not only convince by the fact that they postpone the winter intake once again with their late flowering. The intensive breeding offers more than 10,000 varieties for the garden chrysanthemum alone, which bloom in different colors and at different times. From simple to semi-double to double ponpon flowers, chrysanthemums leave nothing to be desired by the hobby botanist.
Chrysanthemum indicum: characteristics and origin
The kind Chrysanthemum indicum is known by many names. It is called Chinese chrysanthemum, Japanese chrysanthemum, or Indian chrysanthemum. However, most know it as the fall chrysanthemum. It is one of the most important parents of the garden chrysanthemum. However, it is worthwhile not to reduce them to just their known descendants. The species is particularly popular in the garden because of its good winter hardiness. She desperately needs this in her homeland, which stretches from China via Korea, Taiwan, India, Bhutan, Japan, Nepal and Russia to Uzbekistan. Here it grows on roadsides, mountain slopes, fields and under bushes at an altitude of up to 2,900 meters. The robust plant also copes well with moist and salty locations near rivers or beaches. The 0.25 to 1 m high perennials bloom from August to November, depending on the variety. During this time, the fruits known as achenes also develop. A wonderfully aromatic tea can be brewed from these as well as the fresh or dried flower baskets and leaves. Alternatively, the plant parts can also end up in the bath water. In addition, the flower heads can be soaked in vinegar and the young leaves can be eaten cooked.
Types of chrysanthemums: the most beautiful and popular types
The genus of chrysanthemums (C.hrysanthemum) include 37 to 40 different species and countless varieties with impressive ornamental value. Most of the varieties offered here belong to the autumn chrysanthemums or their hybrids. Here are a few hardy eye-catchers for the garden and balcony:
- poetry: Lots of semi-double white flowers from the beginning of October; high stability; good growth; very suitable for perennial beds.
- Small amber: Large semi-double flowers of apricot with yellow pistils; Flowering in September and October; very good perennial evaluation.
- Autumn ruby: Ruby red double flowers; late flowering to November; possibly. Protect flowers from frost.
- Dernier Soleil: Single orange flower with a yellow center; early and long flowering phase from August to November; bee friendly.
- Vrenli: Half-double flowers in October / November in copper-red.
- Lift: Simple purple flowers; Flowering time from October to November; excellent perennial evaluation; bee friendly.
- (Red) Julchen: Dark carmine pink / light pink ponpon flower; high stability; very suitable in perennial beds; Flowering time from October to November.
- Fellbach wine: Semi-double flower from September in bright red; very old variety.
- Mist rose: Blossom in October / November in silver-pink; very easy to care for.
- Order star: Double golden bronze flowers; very long flowering period from August to November.
Note: There are so-called Zawadskii hybrids. These are particularly vigorous, hardy and early flowering. They include the perennial variety 'Clara Curtis' with pale petals and a yellow one Mitte and the 'Duchess of Edinburgh' variety with semi-double, bright red flowers and one yellow one Center.
