Peppermint is easy to care for, making it the perfect herb for starting your own kitchen garden. With our tips it will definitely work!
Herbal tea you have picked yourself is a great thing. Fortunately, one of the Germans' favorite tea herbs is the peppermint (Mentha x piperita), easy to grow and can grow for most of the year without any maintenance measures. In the ideal location, it even multiplies by itself.
Growing peppermint in the garden
- Location: A nutrient-rich, humus soil in a partially shaded location is important. A root barrier is recommended to prevent excessive spreading through root runners. Peppermint also thrives in pots on balconies and patios. It is best to use a peat-free, high-quality organic soil like ours Plantura organic universal soil.
- Propagation: As a natural hybrid, peppermint does not form seeds, but reproduces itself through root runners. The plants only have to be divided and are therefore easy to multiply.
- Watering and fertilizing: In contrast to Mediterranean herbs, peppermint likes it moist, but only needs additional watering after planting and during longer periods of drought. A layer of mulch made of leaves or lawn clippings prevents the soil from drying out. A light fertilizer in the spring helps the plants get off to a good start into the new gardening season. Ideally, you should use a primarily organic bio-fertilizer like ours Plantura organic universal fertilizer with a three-month long-term effect.
- Wintering: Peppermint is well adapted to our climate and therefore sufficiently hardy, but a light winter protection made of brushwood cannot do any harm.
- Harvest and storage: Individual leaves can be picked all year round, but the main harvest season is just before the bloom time in July. The upper parts of the shoots are harvested, which can then be dried or frozen.
- Cut: It is advisable to cut back close to the ground in autumn.

I studied horticulture and I am a real village child. I grow herbs, sweet fruits and vegetables, using only organic products. In addition to my love for nature, I like to cook for my life - preferably with fresh vegetables from my garden, of course.
Favorite fruits: elderberries and raspberries
Favorite vegetables: black cabbage, artichokes and asparagus
