Taking cuttings from existing plants is probably the easiest way to get many new young plants in a short time. To obtain cuttings, a shoot of 10 to 20 cm in length, which has several leaves, must be cut off from the respective plant in spring to early summer. Only cut off young shoots that are not yet lignified. Probably the most effective method for rapid rooting is to remove the leaves at the bottom and place at least half of the cuttings in sandy garden soil. Not all ornamental and garden plants are suitable for propagation by cuttings, so we present ten flowers, herbs and shrubs that are guaranteed to be successful.

1. Propagating roses from cuttings

The undisputed classic among flowers are of course the roses, which come in the most unusual colors and shapes. The popular plants can probably be found in almost every garden and can easily be propagated via offshoots. However, only ungrafted specimens and no grafted specimens should be used. It is best to find out more about the mother plant before cutting it off.

2. Propagate oleanders from cuttings

The Mediterranean plant is not only very popular in the Mediterranean region, but also delights garden fans in this country with its pink flowers. The frost-sensitive plant is usually kept in a bucket in Germany and can easily be propagated by cuttings. In this case, it is advisable to propagate cuttings in water before repotting them in soil. But be careful: the oleander is poisonous, so always wear gloves when cutting.

3. Propagating hydrangeas from cuttings

4. Propagating hibiscus from cuttings

The exotic one hibiscus, also known as marshmallow, bears many colorful and large flowers in summer. Here, too, propagation via cuttings is much easier than sowing seeds. Ideally, the humidity around the cuttings should be increased as the roots grow, for example by placing the cuttings in a nursery.

5. Propagating raspberries from cuttings

Due to their rapid growth, raspberries are considered the ideal plant for propagating cuttings, which also provide us with their sweet, pink fruits. When propagating by cuttings, the berries should be slightly lignified and have at least two leaves. This type of propagation is very promising for the plant and can be repeated several times.

6. Propagating geraniums from cuttings

As one of the best-selling ornamental plants in Europe, the geranium impresses with its bright red flowers and compact growth. The cultivation of Geranium cuttings is uncomplicated and should be carried out with semi-lignified shoots. With geraniums, it is worth using a foil hood to keep the humidity particularly high.

7. Propagating rosemary from cuttings

For many, the easy-care plant is a must in the kitchen and can therefore be found on almost every balcony and terrace. rosemary Like many other kitchen herbs, it is a plant that can be easily and successfully propagated. Always cut cuttings from fresh shoots in the spring and remove the lower needles when planting.

The classic pizza spice can be used in many ways in the kitchen and is considered to be relatively sensitive among kitchen herbs, especially when it comes to water requirements. Propagation of oregano by cuttings is still possible and your stock can be easily increased.

9. Propagate thyme from cuttings

Can be used both fresh and dried thyme easy and delicious to use in the kitchen. As with rosemary and oregano, propagating cuttings is an easy way to grow young plants. Ideally, the cultivation of the mint family is moved indoors, where the temperatures are constantly high.

10. Propagate peppermint by cuttings

Popular for both drinks and dishes, the peppermint as a refreshing change in the garden. As a cross between two mint species, the healthy herb is usually sterile and is therefore best propagated via cuttings or offshoots.
