There are several broad bean varieties that are ideal for growing in the garden. Before you rush to buy seeds, you should know the common varieties.

If you want to grow field beans in the garden or on the balcony, you should make a targeted selection of seeds in advance. In general, there are early, mid-ripening and late-ripening varieties. Particularly compact, bushy forms are advantageous for cultivation on the terrace or balcony. In order to harvest as early as possible, you should start sowing field beans at the beginning of March.

Early sowing of the field bean seed enables you to harvest for the first time in the last days of May. Depending on the variety chosen and of course the location, fresh broad beans can always be harvested until the end of July. You can buy field bean seed in garden shops or from us on the Internet.   • Early and medium varieties:
    • witkiem: large and bright grains.
    • Triple White: proven variety with early harvest time for fava beans; Grains are very tasty and even after cooking they are extremely tender and white.
    • Osnabrück market: well-established variety with very light grains.
  • Late varieties:
    • hang down: traditional and proven variety with green grains.
    • Hunsrueck: very large growing bean variety with yellow to beige grains.
    • Listra: tasty field bean; very tender and tasty grains.
    • Pearl: extremely popular; tender with an excellent aroma; green grain.
    • piccola: green grains; rapid growth and extremely stable variety; high yield.
  • Varieties for growing on balcony or terrace:
    • Robin Hood: very popular variety, does not grow too tall; popular variety for growing on terraces and balconies; very tender grain with good aroma.
