  • Hardiness: Is the desired magnolia sufficiently hardy so that not only the plant but also the buds survive the winter in your region?
  • Do you often have late frosts? Then you might be better off using a late blooming magnolia. If the tree blooms early and gets frost, the petals will turn brown and fall off. So, in the case of a location with cold and harsh winters, choose a hardy and late-flowering variety.
  • Location and size of the plant: How big is the space where the magnolia should grow? Choose a type of magnolia that will still fit well in this location in a few years when it is bigger. If you don't have that much space available, then it's better to use a small or shrub-like species and variety.
  • Age of the plant: It can take up to ten years for young plants to bloom. If you want to enjoy flowering soon, choose a species that starts flowering at a young age. Alternatively, there are also flowering plants to buy, but they are a bit more expensive.
  • Fallen Petals: The blossom is beautiful, but afterwards the ground at the base of the tree is covered with fallen petals. Since these are very fleshy and large, a lot comes together. So when you buy it, keep in mind that a magnolia requires some work.
  • Health of the plant: Fortunately, magnolias are not afflicted by diseases and pests very often. Nevertheless, examine the plant in question carefully and select a vital specimen.
