Cutting hybrid tea: the right way to do it

Whenever you cut a rose, you should follow a few basic rules. Be sure to use sharp pruning shears to make the cut as smooth as possible. Also, always cut about five millimeters above an outward-facing bud. The cut surface should be sloping so that the rainwater can run off.

Properly cut hybrid tea roses are characterized by the formation of long, straight flower stalks. It is best to start with the annual basic pruning by removing extreme branch forks, weak, dead and densely growing shoots. All strong shoots can then be cut back to five eyes and all weaker shoots to three eyes. From each of these buds a branch grows, on which the rose blossoms. Therefore, do not leave too many shoots. With a weak-growing variety, three to four strong shoots are sufficient. Five to six shoots should remain on fast-growing varieties. Each year you can also cut off one leading shoot close to the ground to stimulate regeneration through new shoots from the base.
