Why isn't my ginkgo growing and what can I do?

When a ginkgo isn't growing, it can be due to its slow-growing nature, use of energy for the root zone, or weak-growing varieties. A loose, well-drained soil, sufficient watering, regular fertilization and no direct competition from roots can help.

Why isn't the ginkgo growing?

If the ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) does not want to grow, there can be various reasons. As a rule, however, you don't have to worry as long as the shoots have green leaves and the sapling looks healthy. Periods of stagnation are normal for the ginkgo, especially since the species anyway very slowly grows.

For example, underground root growth can be more pronounced in young trees. In this case, the ginkgo puts all of its energy into the growth of the roots, so that there is no energy left for above-ground growth.

What can you do to make the ginkgo grow?

If the ginkgo doesn't grow, a lot of patience will help. It is perfectly normal for the tree to stop growing for a year or more - especially if it hasn't been there for too long

Location stands. However, you can support the "rotten" tree:

  • Provide loose, well-drained soil.
  • Water on hot summer days.
  • Fertilize the sapling twice a year.
  • Avoid planting the tree disc.

Although ginkgoes basically grow almost everywhere, experience has shown that they do grow in very loamy soil slower – here the roots have more trouble spreading and this is reflected in above ground growth as well. In addition, the wood does not like direct root competition.

How fast does the ginkgo grow?

Which ginkgo variety do you have at home? Sometimes the reason for not growing is also due to a particularly slow-growing variety: special ones dwarf varieties such as 'Mariken' or 'Baldi' grow particularly slowly and also remain extremely small.

But even the original species does not necessarily hurry with its growth – on average 20 centimeters is what a sapling grows each year, with annual growth varying greatly can. Just freshly planted pot specimensthat have been kept small for years sometimes explode. Others, on the other hand, only grow a few centimeters a year and so apparently not at all.

How much space does the ginkgo need when it is old?

The ginkgo grows so slowly because it very old can be: Typically, trees that can reach an age of around 1000 years show very slow growth. Nevertheless, a ginkgo can grow up to 40 meters high and very wide in its home location.

In our latitudes, however, the ginkgo counts as a medium-tall tree: in this country it grows up to approx. 15 meters high and ten meters wide, it will eventually take a lot lots of space and should not be directly on a house wall or on the property line to be planted.

Tip

When does the ginkgo start to sprout?

From the end of April / beginning of May, depending on the weather, ginkgoes will sprout fresh green leaves again. The flowers usually appear before the leaves and can be seen from March, but are very inconspicuous. In October, the green leaves turn golden yellow and fall off.
