Zigzag shrub: the ideal location

The zigzag shrub is a real eye-catcher due to the kinks in the shoots. It is only partially frost hardy and therefore needs an optimal location both in summer and in winter.

In a nutshell

  • semi-shady location ideal
  • moderate temperatures
  • protect from persistent rain
  • for outdoor plants, humus-rich and well-drained soil

Light

The zigzag shrub (Corokia cotoneaster) comes from New Zealand, where it occurs in open areas in the forest. In summer, a partially shaded location is best for the zigzag shrub. In the blazing sun, evaporation through the leaves is very high. Drought damage can therefore occur even with short-term water shortages.

Light needs of the zigzag shrub

  • bright
  • little direct sun
  • no direct midday sun

temperature

Although the zigzag shrub originally comes from a climatically favorable region, it prefers moderate temperatures. The forests at the original sites not only provide shade but also cool air, which also reduces evaporation.

It is optimal when the temperature is between 15 and 20 °C during the summer months. On very hot days, the zigzag tree can be placed in full shade for a short time.

Constant rain in summer is also disadvantageous for the location of the zigzag shrub. Even if it appreciates a slightly higher humidity, it can increase in continuous rain fall ill. If the weather continues to be bad, it is advisable to plant the shrub, e.g. B. under a canopy to protect it from direct rain.

Tip: If the heat is persistent, it is advisable to place a large bowl of water next to the zigzag bush or it to spray occasionally. The film of water on the surface of the plant lowers the temperature, and evaporation from the leaves can be slightly reduced.

Floor

The zigzag shrub is only resistant to frost down to temperatures around freezing point. The plant tolerates light frosts, but usually only with frost damage to the shoot tips.

Floor requirements:

  • humorous
  • permeable
  • no waterlogging

In the case of heavily compacted soil, it is necessary to install a drainage system to avoid waterlogging. Ideal is an approx. 10 cm thick layer of lava rock.

location in winter

The zigzag shrub is mainly cultivated in pots in order to be able to overwinter frost-free. One should not do without winter protection even in favorable locations when planting outdoors. For this purpose, use a winter fleece with which you cover the plant. When cultivated in pots, the zigzag shrub can be overwintered in frost-free but cool rooms.

Conditions:

  • cool (5 – 10 °C)
  • bright
  • no dry heating air
  • Avoid drafts

The optimal location for the zigzag shrub is, for example, a bright stairwell or a frost-free but unheated conservatory.

A notice: If the zigzag shrub is too warm in winter, it may not flower the following year. Make sure the shrub is cooler for at least a few weeks to stimulate flowering.

frequently asked Questions

When can the zigzag shrub go outside after winter?

If it reliably no longer freezes, you can put the zigzag shrub outside. This is the case from around mid-May. Gradually get the zigzag shrub used outdoors and initially only put it outside for a short time during the day.

When does the zigzag shrub go into winter quarters?

From mid-September you should start acclimating the zigzag shrub to winter quarters. Similar to the change to the field, this makes the transition easier for him. At night you can place the zigzag shrub in the sheltered winter quarters, where it will grow from approx. end of September or remains permanent in early October until next spring.

Does the zigzag shrub need a lot of water in winter?

No, only moderately water the zigzag shrub in winter. However, make sure that the humidity in heated rooms is not too low. Occasionally you can spray the plant with a little water in winter.
