How long do spruce decking boards last?

The durability of spruce decking boards depends on how they are treated: untreated, they last 1-2 years per centimeter of material thickness, impregnated spruce wood is significantly more durable. For a longer service life, we recommend a thickness of at least 2.5 centimeters and ecological wood protection.

What thickness should spruce wood decking have?

Basically, the stronger the spruce wood, the more stable and durable the decking made of it. Most commercially available spruce floorboards are between two and three centimeters thick. We recommend a strength of at least 2.5 centimeters.

How to extend shelf life?

Just like other experts, we recommend you, for decking only impregnated spruce wood to use if you insist on this type of wood. It is true that spruce is one of the cheapest woods; but if left untreated, you would have to replace the floorboards at relatively short intervals, which would involve a lot of effort - ultimately also financially.

But: It does not necessarily have to be spruce wood contaminated with chemicals. Opt for treatment if possible ecological wood preservative. Otherwise, it makes more sense to choose a more resistant wood.

Which decking boards last the longest?

Hardwoods such as teak, bangkirai or bamboo are best suited for terrace construction. Decking boards made of such material last a particularly long time. If it is to be a coniferous wood, we recommend above all larch and douglas fir. In addition, heat-treated thermal wood made of pine or ash is an option. The wood-like WPC is also popular.
