Time and location

If you want to sow peppers or chilies, it is best to start as early as possible. This ensures that the plants actually ripen and bear fruit by the end of the season. As a rule, the seeds are sown at the end of February / beginning of March, provided the light conditions and temperatures permit. The optimal conditions can be achieved at the following locations:

  • heated greenhouse
  • Winter garden
  • Windowsill on a south window

equipment

What is needed?

In addition to the date and location, the required equipment naturally also plays an important role. First and foremost here is that

Substrate should be mentioned, because conventional potting soil is generally not recommended. It is better to put the seeds in a special Potting soil to sow. Because this is much finer crumbly and poor in nutrients, which in turn has a positive effect on the development of the roots. Vessels are also required for cultivation, whereby the following options are available:

  • Growing bowl or growing potty
  • Yogurt pots
  • small pots made of peat
  • Egg cartons
  • Coconut spring pots

Note: If the vessel does not have a lid, a transparent film is also required.

instructions

Many hobby gardeners swear by sowing the peppers and chili seeds before sowing pre-swell. For this purpose, the seeds are soaked in warm chamomile tea for around 24 hours. This process should not only kill fungal spores, but also make the seedlings healthier and stronger. As soon as the date for sowing has come, it is best to proceed as follows:

  • Fill the seed tray with potting soil
  • Distribute seeds evenly
  • Insert about 1 cm deep
  • Put a thin layer of soil on top
  • Gently press the earth
  • moisten carefully but thoroughly
  • Cover the vessel with transparent foil
Sow the peppers in a planting bowl

Note: Capsicum and chilli germinate best at a temperature of around 25 ° C. However, if it's too cold, the plants won't germinate!

Germination time and care

The germination time of peppers and chilli depends on various factors and can therefore vary. When factors such as light, temperature and humidity are optimal, the seedlings grow correspondingly faster. In general, however, it can be said that the first pair of cotyledons forms around three to four weeks after sowing. Until then, it is advisable to pay attention to the following:

  • Always keep the substrate moist
  • Avoid waterlogging
  • Maintain around 25 ° C
  • Take off the cover in between

Note: A weak and / or deformed seedling should be disposed of immediately after germination.
