Velvety, relatively large, shimmering dark red to violet flowers are the beguiling trademark of the Warsaw Night Clematis 'Warszawska Nike'. Under optimal conditions in the garden, the climbing plant can reach a height of up to 3.5 meters and is extremely easy to care for. Blossom lovers will definitely get their money's worth with this clematis hybrid in summer - provided they have the courage to cut back vigorously in autumn.

Location

If you want to have a lot of fun with your Clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night, invest some time in finding a location. The plant generally likes it sunny. A really sunny spot is therefore ideal for this clematis hybrid. If necessary, it can also cope relatively well with partial shade or shade. Incidentally, the root base must always be protected from sunlight by perennials of the shallow-rooted ground cover. It is much more important that you find a place for her to climb to the top. It is true that it also has a certain appeal as a ground cover. But it only shows its full splendor at a certain height. The so-called deciduous clematis, to which this Polish hybrid also belongs, work their way up using petiole tendrils. However, this is only possible if a climbing aid is available. Of course, the “Warsaw Night” shines particularly effectively on the wall of a house or a shed. However, she also needs a climbing aid here. For example:

  • fences
  • wires
  • ropes
  • nets
  • obelisks
  • pergolas
  • scaffolding

No matter which climbing aid you choose, it should never have a diameter larger than that than three centimeters, so that the fine tendrils of the plant can actually meander around them. In a sunny location, the "Warszawska Nike" can easily reach a height of two meters or even top it. A maximum of 3.5 meters is also not that uncommon.

Tip:

An old tree can also be used excellently as a climbing aid, for example by attaching a fine net to its trunk. The combination of tree trunk and clematis is even particularly attractive.

Floor

The Clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night is basically a very undemanding plant. This is also reflected in the demands it places on the floor. Basically, there are only two aspects to consider - it should be as humus rich and loose as possible. In a pinch, of course, it can also get along quite well with rather poor soils. However, it is recommended to mix the existing soil with humus in advance. Incidentally, when it comes to the floor, it must always be ensured that the water drains off well and that no waterlogging can form. If in doubt, it makes sense to place a drain. It is also advisable to always plant them a little deeper than other climbing plants. It should be about a hand's breadth deeper. If several plants are placed next to each other, the distance between them should be around 60 centimeters.

Care

Clematis 'Warszawska Nike' does not require much care. If the location and the soil conditions are more or less in line with your requirements, you can largely leave it to yourself. Of course, regular watering is required in the garden. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. You should also make sure that the root feet are always well shaded. During the flowering period, the plant needs a lot of nutrients, which are best supplied by adding hummus. Plant fertilizer, which is available in specialist shops, is also helpful.

cut

The sticking point with all clematis hybrids is always the cut. It has to be very different from species to species. To make things a little easier for gardeners and hobby gardeners, all Clematis hybrids have been divided into so-called cutting groups. The intensity of the cut then also depends on the respective group. The following applies:

  • Cut Group 1: Light cut as needed
  • Pruning group 2: Heavy pruning around half the shoot length
  • Pruning group 3: Very strong pruning

The clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night belongs to pruning group 3 and must therefore be pruned extremely hard. Each individual main shoot should therefore be shortened to 30 to 50 centimeters. Admittedly, that sounds radical and also requires a bit of courage. However, it is worth it. In summer, the plant only flowers on the new shoots - and an extreme pruning ensures that many new shoots are formed. The best time for this are the months of November and December. Either sharp pruning shears or a small pruning saw are suitable as cutting tools. Clean blades are important. By the way, it is not advisable to forego the pruning. On the one hand, there is a risk that this clematis hybrid will become bare. On the other hand, it becomes lazy to bloom very quickly.

hibernate

Clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night is not only capable of a lot when it comes to pruning. When it comes to temperatures, the plant also adapts to sub-zero temperatures. In any case, it tolerates an average winter in our latitudes outdoors without any problems. If necessary, it can withstand temperatures as low as minus 29 degrees Celsius. It is therefore definitely frost or hardy.

Bucket attitude

The clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night can of course also be cultivated outdoors in a planter, on the terrace or on the balcony. In principle, the same requirements apply as for cultivation directly in the garden. In particular, it must be ensured that there is no waterlogging. In addition, the supply of nutrients is of particular importance. Nutrient-rich substrate is therefore absolutely necessary. Likewise, the root feet must be protected from the sun. In this context, a mulch layer is advisable when keeping buckets. And very important: Without a climbing aid, the plant cannot unfold its full splendor.

heyday

As already mentioned, the flowers of the clematis 'Warszawska Nike' Warsaw Night are particularly attractive. With a diameter of twelve to 14 centimetres, they are also extremely impressive. The plant basically flowers throughout the summer, i.e. during the months of June, July, August and September. You can easily get cut flowers for the vase from it. However, it is advisable to wear gloves when cutting and arranging. This clematis hybrid is mildly toxic and secretes a sap that can irritate the skin.
