When and how long the lavender blooms depends on the variety and the climate in which it grows. It can be assumed that lavender has a longer flowering period in warmer climates, such as the Mediterranean, than in colder climates. But with the right care, the flowering can also be extended in our latitudes, the lavender plants can be made to bloom for the second time. The decorative plants can be found all over the world.
Germany's heyday
In the local climatic zones, the lavender bloom starts much later than it does in the Mediterranean. This is especially true too depending on the variety. The widespread Coppy lavender belongs to the early blooming and also best known types of lavender. Because the plant blooms the longest, even in the local latitudes. In Germany, hobby gardeners can therefore enjoy the decorative and pleasantly scented herbs as follows:
- most lavender varieties only from mid-June
- some even as late as July
- Early summer still too cool here
- also dependent on the weather
- the more sun the better
If you plant several types of lavender, early and late, in a flower bed at the same time, you can also extend the lavender bloom time. But in autumn at the latest, when the days are getting cooler and shorter, the last herbaceous plant will also wither at the end of September.
Cut back for a longer period of time
If the lavender plants are cut back in summer, they often bloom a second time in late summer. If the flowers have faded at the end of July or beginning of August, action should be taken immediately to extend the time for the fragrant flowers. Proceed as follows when cutting:
- cut all withered inflorescences
- Shorten by about a third
- remove before the seeds are formed
- Leave branches with leaves
With a little luck, decorative flowers will form a second time in August to September. If, on the other hand, the lavender plants are to be harvested and processed further, the inflorescences are cut while the flowers are still open. In such a case, too, there is usually a second flowering.
Different sorts
A prolonged flowering period in the local latitudes can easily be achieved if several different varieties of the graceful lavender are planted in the garden bed. Of the Coppy lavender is thus the first to form its flowers. In warm climates this can be the case as early as May, until June it has bloomed in all climates. The real lavender begins to show its lush flowers at the beginning of June, especially in the mountain regions. The following lavender plants should also be mentioned:
- Speiklavender in mid-June
- Lavandula in late June
- all varieties until around the end of August
Depending on the variety and the right cut in summer, the sea of flowers of the graceful Lavandula can also be extended into September.
Flowering in Italy and France
If you want to experience the lavender blossom in Provence or Italy, you should choose the for your travel time May or June choose. Because it is precisely in these two months that the wide fields in France and Tuscany shine in a blue sea as far as the eye can see. Since the fields are planted here for further use, the lavender flowers are usually cut when they have just bloomed. A lavandula that grows in the wild or is cultivated as an ornamental plant in a garden has a longer flowering time in warm climates than in the local latitudes. The following duration can be assumed:
- the lavender bloom season starts earlier
- the first flowers appear in May
- blooms until the end of August
So here two different flowering times can be assumed. One of them is the wild or non-commercial lavender in the gardens, which blooms between May and August. On the other hand, the lavender used for commercial purposes in the vast cultivation fields in Tuscany and Provence. This splendor of flowers can usually be admired between May and June due to the early harvest.
Flowering period in Spain
Mallorca, the Balearic island belonging to Spain, also has the right climate to grow lavender. So here too, the viewer is offered between May and June the purple fields with the decorative flowers and the breathtaking scent. Here, too, the lavender plants are grown for commercial purposes, as in France and Tuscany. The exact time and length of the blooming lavender plants in the Balearic Islands also depends on the use:
- the first flowers appear in May
- in the fields until mid-June
- then it is harvest time
- in private gardens until August
- depending on the pruning, also until September
Since the climate in the main cultivation area Mallorca is the same as in the other Mediterranean countries, the lavender plants bloom here from May until well into late summer and early autumn.
Lavender blooms in Africa and Asia
There are also lavender plants in Africa and Asia. But the poppy lavender, known here in the local latitudes and on the cultivation fields on the Mediterranean, does not occur there, because other varieties predominate here. The following variety can be found in Africa and the Asian countries:
- Green tooth lavender
- blooms between June and August
- not as a cultivable plant in these countries
- grow wild
In Asia the lavender plants are not very widespread, there are only a few wild specimens. In North Africa, on the other hand, which is close to the European Mediterranean area, there are also many varieties that are native to Europe. Because especially in the times of the Orient, the lavender plants were also used commercially here. The plants were also shipped due to the lively trade connections between the Mediterranean countries and North Africa. The flowering time is similar to that of the Lavandula from the Mediterranean areas, as there is a similar climate.
