Beeches are getting very old and should be allowed to grow there for many decades.

Ingrown beech hedges can no longer be replanted. At best, they can be removed at great expense.

Beeches have very extensive roots

Beeches are shallow roots. The roots don't go very deep, but they expand widely. It is therefore almost impossible to dig up the beeches in order to replant them. The root system would be so badly damaged that the tree would not grow back.

If you want to move a beech hedge that has not been growing on site for that long, you need to:

  • Cut down beeches
  • Generously dig up the roots
  • Carefully pull out the sapling
  • Dig a large new planting hole
  • Position the tree so that the roots are not kinked.

What to do when the beech hedge is in the way

Sometimes a beech hedge already stands in the garden of a newly bought house. If you really need the space, all you have left is that Excavate hedge and eliminate.

If you want to erect paving slabs or a wall on the spot, all you need to do is cut the beech trees off the ground. The roots are then allowed to remain in the ground, where they slowly rot. The soil is heavily compacted by the stones. As a result, the root stocks no longer sprout.

If you want to create another hedge or use the location for bushes, trees or beds, you must remove the root stocks as completely as possible. Otherwise, the new plants will not have enough space to spread and grow.

Tips

Beech hedges are ecologically valuable because they provide shelter and food for birds and insects. You should therefore leave an older beech hedge, if necessary rejuvenate. It is still very decorative even in old age.
