How do lizards live?

Lizards are reptiles and cold-blooded animals. They cannot regulate their temperature themselves; they need sunlight to warm up. This is the reason why you can often see the shy animals sunbathing.

Lizards lay eggs, which are surrounded by a leather-like shell. The female places these in a hole in the ground, where they are hatched by the sun. In the case of the forest lizard, however, this is a little different: Since they are in a rather cool habitat is adapted, the egg shell bursts open as soon as the eggs are laid and the young animals that are already viable Hatch.

How can I make my garden lizard-friendly?

A diversely designed, not too tidy garden offers good living conditions not only for lizards. The shy reptiles can find shelter here, for example, in hedges and brushwood piles. Open and sometimes elevated areas such as a rock garden or a small one

Natural stone wall, offer the ideal conditions for sunbathing. Sparsely overgrown, loose soil is suitable for laying eggs.

Even if you don't see lizards that often: The animals are diurnal and quite loyal to their place. Avoid the use of insecticides, as spiders, beetles, snails and worms serve as food for the reptiles.

Retreats in which the lizards can hide are of great importance. A dry stone wall with deep crevices is ideal. These can be made extremely attractive with attractive planting or replanting and can be easily integrated into the look of the garden.

Tips

Due to a misunderstood love of animals, please do not catch any lizards in the wild in order to resettle them in your own garden. Most of the time, the local animals do not survive. If your garden is designed to be lizard-friendly, the reptiles usually settle there by themselves.
