Small incisions should be performed annually or every two years. If you remove a maximum of two shoots for each measure, you reduce the workload and the branch removals are no longer noticeable. Nevertheless, you make sure that the wood grows healthy and remains steadfast.

It is possible to cut shortly before the leaf shoots between February and March or immediately after the flowering period. An early cut is a convenient alternative that allows you to prune all of the shrubs and trees in the garden. From the point of view of bird protection, this time is recommended as the birds do not start breeding until later. However, there is a risk that you will remove numerous branches with flower bases. You can enjoy full bloom with a later summer pruning, because no buds are lost.

Remove old, weak, and damaged branches at the base or just above the ground. Such specimens can be derived from younger side branches. In the long run, the stripping of instincts is counterproductive. Shrubs respond to such measures with numerous new shoots in the upper area. A thicket of leaves is created here, while the base is balding.

These specimens require stronger cutting measures in the form of subsidy cuts. They develop their flower buds on this year's shoots. The aim of pruning is to encourage fresh shoots that bloom profusely in summer.

Spring pruning in March is recommended for this group of trees, as the bushes then sprout vigorously. In this process you also create the flower buds for the upcoming season, so that you do not have to accept any loss of willingness to flower. At the same time, you can control the growth in size of the trees.

Cut the growth back to a third to a quarter of its original height. Remove branches that appear sick and weak, or that have died. On the other hand, careful and small cutbacks lead to the formation of shorter new shoots.
Tips
Prevent shoot stumps. Young shoots are shortened slightly diagonally about five millimeters above a bud. This way you keep the cut as small as possible.
