Raising pomegranate as a bonsai

This is how the species grows

The pomegranate is a deciduous wood from the Mediterranean region. The dwarf form Punica granatum var. nana is ideal for designing a bonsai because it remains naturally small and reaches a maximum height of one meter. The 'Nejikan' variety develops twisted trunks, which gives the mini tree a particularly attractive appearance.

Styles

The wood allows all styles that are offered in bonsai art. The most common is the broom shape, which you can shape by regular and targeted pruning. Wire techniques are not necessary for this growth form. An upright tree also looks aesthetically pleasing.

Cut

Cutting measures are possible in the leafless phase in winter until spring, before the branches sprout. Pomegranates tolerate heavy pruning and develop fresh shoots after two weeks. When the shoots have reached a length of 15 centimeters, they can be shortened to two to five pairs of leaves. This intervention is possible throughout the growing season.

Exceptions

If you want flowers to develop, do without later interventions from April onwards. The intensely glowing single flowers arise on the shoots and round off the overall picture. To prevent the tree from exhausting itself, remove all but a few of the fruits.

Wiring and tensioning

The ideal time of year is spring, as soon as the buds start to swell. To prevent ingrowth and the formation of scars, you must check the growth weekly. One to two year old branches can be bent into the desired shape by wrapping wire. Older specimens are harder to shape because they break off easily. The anchoring method is suitable for influencing their alignment.

Maintain

Like every mini tree, the pomegranate also places demands on coordinated care. Since the wood in the planter has a limited space available, the water and nutrient administration are of great importance.

Water requirement

During the growth phase, pomegranates have a higher water consumption than in the rest phase in winter. In the flowering period, this also increases. Since this also depends on the ambient conditions, you should use the substrate surface in the eye keep. As soon as this has dried slightly, a thorough irrigation takes place. Keep the soil slightly moist over the winter months.

Nutritional requirements

Between March and mid-November, fertilization is carried out every 14 days. When the plants bloom, they suspend the supply of nutrients. Liquid fertilizers for bonsai provide the trees with all the nutrients they need. Mix the liquid with pouring water. As an alternative, we recommend fertilizer cones, which are used for potted plants.
