When is winter protection necessary?

Forget-me-not is usually kept as a biennial plant. the sowing takes place in the first year, followed by the in the second blossom. the sowing should be done by July so that the young forget-me-nots can be planted out by the onset of autumn.

If the perennial is sown too late, it can only be transplanted later. It doesn't have enough time to develop roots and foliage, and it's not completely hardy.

Forget-me-nots overwinter in the pot

You can overwinter the pots in a frost-free but very cool place, for example in a cold greenhouse. A basement is suitable if there is enough light there. However, it is not possible to spend the winter in a warm room.

If you don't have a greenhouse or there isn't enough space in the basement, forget-me-nots can also be overwintered outside. The forget-me-not survives the winter in the pot if you protect it adequately from frost:

  • Place the bucket on styrofoam or wood
  • Wrap the pot with bubble wrap
  • Cover plants with leaves

Place the pot in a sheltered corner on the balcony or terrace. Make sure the soil doesn't dry out completely. You can water the forget-me-not once on frost-free days.
