Division of the trees into cutting groups

Carrying out a maintenance cut depends on the structure and flowering behavior of the respective wood. For practical reasons, the trees and bushes are assigned to different cutting groups, which we will explain in more detail below.

Section group 1: No maintenance section necessary

First of all, all tree-shaped species belong to this group. With them, upbringing and building cuts have usually already been carried out in the tree nurseries and anyway only necessary in the first years of standing. Trees in this group often build up harmoniously without cutting measures, so that only a thinning out and the removal of dead and broken wood can be necessary. In addition to many summer and evergreen deciduous trees, they all belong too Conifers in this group.

Cutting group 2: Regular thinning necessary

Many deciduous shrubs form unbranched long shoots near the ground year after year, which branch out and begin to bloom in the following year. The branching continues in the following years, with the branches getting shorter and shorter and the number and size of the flowers slowly decreasing. Typically, parts of branches or even entire plants age. To prevent this, some of the oldest branches should be cut down to the ground every two to three years. Radical pruning down to short stumps is also often possible.

Cutting group 3: Heavy pruning in spring

This group includes shrub species that plant their flowers from early summer to autumn at the ends of this year's long shoots. Here you cut all previous year's branches back to the shortest possible branch stubs.

Cutting group 4: cut back after flowering

These are tree and shrub species whose flowers are attached to the long shoots of the previous year and which bloom in spring. With regular strong pruning immediately after flowering, you will ensure a rich bloom also in the coming year.

Cutting group 5: cutting in hedge plants

The formation of a hedge begins with young plants. They need to be pruned heavily on a regular basis, with the main pruning taking place in winter. Summer pruning, on the other hand, should not be carried out until the end of July so as not to disturb breeding birds. A hedge will develop best if the side walls are not cut vertically, but in a trapezoidal shape.

Tips

The respective cutting group and thus the information about the correct pruning is often given on the plant labels.
