instructions

  1. expose the root ball
  2. Depending on the intended purpose, you now have two options
  3. either you cut the bale in half into two equal parts
  4. or you just remove a few lateral runners
  5. use either your hands, a sharp knife, or a spade or an ax
  6. put one half in the exact same place in the ground
  7. plant the other half in any location
  8. then water both the old and new plants well

Tips

Always use a sharp spade. On the one hand you have to use less force, on the other hand you only damage the remaining roots minimally.

The right time

The zebra grass is divided as best as possible shortly after pruning and before new shoots appear, i.e. in spring. In order for the plant to be able to cope with the removal of the roots, it should be at least three years old. Of course, you should choose a frost-free day for the procedure.

Forward-looking care

Zebra grass spreads over a large area without your intervention. Even if you do not want to multiply the plant, regular division of the root ball is therefore recommended. You should inhibit growth in this way after three years at the latest. Otherwise, the roots will become so strong that you will find it difficult to cut through even with an ax. You don't even have to cut off half of the root ball. For routine care, it is sufficient to remove a few offshoots.
