The origin-specific requirements of the bougainvillea

Bougainvilleas are a horticultural gem for a reason - with their colorful bracts they deliver that eye a magnificent picture. Bougainvilleas come from a comparatively limited area between Equador and Brazil and are therefore dependent on very special climatic and soil conditions. The seasonal rhythm and the cooler temperatures of our latitudes therefore do them less well. So how do you create conditions for the lush Andean plants that are as similar to their origin as possible, so that they can be grown to their full glory in the room?

Choose a sunny location

So what the bougainvillea needs, according to its arid tropical home, is plenty of sun, pronounced dry and wet phases and nutrient-rich soil. You can offer all of this to her in the room. A heated winter garden with full sunlight would of course be ideal for year-round cultivation. If you cannot call one of these your own, a location on a generous window front that is oriented to the south as much as possible is also suitable. This is how you satisfy the bougainvillea's hunger for light and warmth.

nutrient-rich substance, small bucket

Their home region offers the bougainvillea nutrient-rich soils. Therefore, you should offer it a correspondingly rich substrate when keeping it in the bucket. Above all, it should contain minerals and can also be easily enriched with clay. Permeability is important to protect the roots from waterlogging, to which the bougainvillea reacts very sensitively. A small bucket is recommended to bring the plant too many flowers. If there is too much substrate mass, it tends to form more leaves - to the disadvantage of the flowers.

Careful casting practice

Bougainvilleas should always be kept moist, but protected from waterlogging. You should make sure that there is an adequate, even water supply, especially during the vegetation surge. This can of course be a bit more challenging in a heated room. A careful watering practice, however, the bougainvillea will thank you with colorful, lush blooms.

Here is an overview of the cultivation of bougainvilleas in the room:

  • Choose a sunny, warm location (facing south) if possible
  • Put in rather small buckets with a nutrient-rich, mineral-rich substrate
  • Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging as much as possible
