The time window for planting

The rhizome of the lotus flower is sensitive, parts can easily break off and cause the plant to die. The safest way to plant the rhizome is when it is dormant from March to April. This is also the period in which rhizomes are offered for sale in stores.

Planting in a pot

Pot planting is a good idea if you don't own a garden pond or if you have the lotus as a Houseplant want to admire. Obtain for that Lotus flower a round pot with a volume of 60 to 90 liters. It should be approx. 60 cm deep and at least 50 cm wide. A dark colored pot is advantageous as it heats up faster and keeps the heat longer.

  • this is followed by an approx. 10 cm high layer without fertilizer
  • water with lukewarm water until the soil becomes mushy
  • Dig a hole the size of a rhizome and place the rhizome in it
  • Shoot must not be covered by soil
  • Fill 5-10 cm of water over it
  • Wait for the floating leaves to emerge
  • then raise the water level to 30 cm

Tips

Do not add compost or other organic fertilizers to the lotus flower, as these, when combined with water, lead to rot.

Planting in the pond

The simplest variant is to first plant the lotus in a pot and then let it in the pond in a sunny spot. Should a larger pond be at least two square meters for the lotus flower and at least 60 cm deep, you can fill this area with an approx. Cut off the 40 cm high wall and fill it with nutrient-rich soil.

One rhizome is planted per square meter. Without much care the lotus flower can grow in it and also for many years overwinter.
