Don't wait too long

The right timing is essential when it comes to hedge trimming. If you choose the wrong time, you may do more harm than good to your trees. Plants also go through a resting phase in winter, in which they largely cease their growth. We therefore recommend that you cut a hedge in winter

  • the late autumn before the first frost
  • or the first mild days after the last frost

In either case, don't wait too long.

Cut hedge at the beginning of winter

From mid-October to November, the weather conditions are good for pruning the hedge. Now the sky is mostly overcast, your trees do not threaten to dry out. Keep in mind that any cut is an injury that is very sensitive to sunlight. But the opposite, i.e. massive cold and frost, also has a negative effect on the development of your crops. Especially bushes like that Boxwoodthat sprout again after a hedge cut are at risk. Therefore, do not postpone the hedge cut in front of you, but take advantage of a still mild, cloudy autumn day.

Cut the hedge when spring comes

It is inevitable that some branches will die off in winter. If the thermometer climbs up again at the beginning of February, it is high time to remove brown branches to give your hedge a neat appearance. Bring the trees back into shape with a radical cut. Now is the best time for this, as your hedge has not yet fully woken up from its "hibernation" and you are not injuring too many young shoots. You should only wait for early bloomers, as these are only cut after the first bloom. Then, however, only a shape cut is possible, as the law only allows a radical cut until the end of February. Your hedge is a popular place for birds to build nests, especially in spring. If you breach the protective measure, you must expect a fine.
