Create a habitat for hornets

The striped Brummer have increasing problems to find suitable places for their nest. In nature they prefer to settle in old, hollow trees that have become rare in our world.

Hornet boxes hung in the garden, which you can purchase ready-made in stores, provide a remedy. This has several advantages:

• Nest in an insect-friendly garden the hornets do not unintentionally enter the roller shutter box or behind loose boards in the garden shed.
• The large wasps devour many insects with which we humans do not so much like to share the green. For example, wasps, mosquitoes and horseflies are on their menu.
• A hornet box contributes to biodiversity and prevents the Hornets colonize roosts intended for other animals such as bat boxes.

The self-made hornet box

The instructions for the practical "Mündener Hornet Box" can be found free of charge on the Internet. It is 65 x 25 x 25 centimeters on the inside and therefore offers enough space for a larger hornet colony.

The inside of a box has to be rough so that the animals can find a good grip. Unplaned spruce boards are ideal, as they can be processed very well even by inexperienced craftsmen.

How is the hornet box hung?

• A quiet corner of the garden where the hornets are undisturbed is ideal.
• Hang the quarters for the large wasps at a height of at least four meters.
• The box must be firmly mounted on the wall or tree, facing away from the weather side, as the insects react to even the smallest vibrations.
• The entrance hole should be free of branches so that the animals can fly into it unhindered.
• There Hornets are also on their way in the dark, there should not be a source of light that is too bright in the vicinity.
