Features of vegetative reproduction
If plants are not pollinated by insects or wind, but propagated by their own parts of the plant, one speaks of vegetative, asexual or asexual propagation. This includes both the simple rooting of cuttings and the previous grafting process. In contrast to seed propagation, when you grow from cuttings, you get an exact clone of the mother plant. This is particularly advantageous if you want to preserve the properties of your existing plant that you have come to love.
instructions
- take any number of cuttings from the mother plant
- be careful not to inflict large wounds on the mother plant
- Put cuttings in a glass of fresh water
- keep in a warm, bright place
- Renew the water regularly
- Depending on the type of plant, roots form within several days / weeks
- carefully transplant into a suitable substrate

Separate cuttings
As already indicated in the instructions, the mother plant must not suffer from the severing of the cuttings. Therefore only use Kindel from a healthy, fully grown plant. A sharp knife is also essential. With a blunt blade, you tend to take the cuttings
to saw off. The unclean cut heals slowly and gives bacteria and fungi an access to the inside of the mother plant.Botany distinguishes between two different types of cuttings:
- Leaf or shoot cuttings
- Cuttings from the tip of the shoot
The leaf or shoot cuttings are simple leaves that you separate from the mother plant and place in the water glass. In a suitable location, they will soon develop their own roots.
Cuttings from the tip of the shoot increase the risk of harming the mother plant. This is the uppermost part of the driving tip (about 5 to 10 cm). Since they contain the first pairs of leaves, they have the optimal properties for rooting in the water glass. Since they perspire less than leaf cuttings, the water requirement decreases, so that roots can also form in small vessels. However, they also represent an important glucose store for the mother plant. Separating them weakens the existing copy.
Requirements for the cutting
It is true that you should consider carefully whether your existing plant can handle the cutting of several leaves, however does rooting in a water glass only work if the cuttings have at least one leaf, the so-called Nodium, own.
After you have cut off the Kindel, you should immediately put it in the water glass. If the cuttings are stored for a long time, they break down valuable carbohydrates, which reduces the chances of successful root formation.
Note: removed cuttings lose water through perspiration. Before the first roots have formed in the water glass, it is unfortunately not possible for the young shoots to take in water through the stem. Therefore, make sure there is high humidity at the location so that the cuttings can supply themselves with liquid via the air.
