What are the benefits of mulching the hedge?

This measure makes hedge maintenance noticeably easier and offers numerous advantages:

  • The grass clippings rot under the plants and thus represent a high-quality, organic fertilizer.
  • The mulch layer made of grass clippings keeps sunlight away from the ground and thus inhibits the growth of competitive vegetation.
  • The protective cover has a compensatory function: the earth stays cool longer in the heat and dehydration is reduced.
  • In winter, the soil organisms are protected.

How is grass clippings mulched?

Lawn clippings should be applied thinner than other mulch materials. The reason: If you spread the clippings in too thick a layer, the very damp material will stick together and can rot. Spread this mulch material no more than two to five centimeters thick under the bushes.

Alternatively, you can let the green cuttings dry off for a few days. The mulch layer under the trees should still be loosened up again and again.

Mix grass clippings with mulch materials

If the hedge plants need more nutrients, you can mix the material with other plant residues in a targeted manner:

  • Grass clippings are relatively nitrogenous. If you add shredded material or leaves, the better ventilation not only prevents rotting, the bushes also get exactly the nutrients they need for healthy growth.
  • Straw is high in carbon and is also good for mixing with grass clippings.

Aren't the clippings untidy under the hedge?

Freshly applied, this mulch material shines bright green and looks even more attractive than the bare earth under the bushes. Even if the lawn dries up a bit and becomes brownish as a result, the mulch layer looks cleaner than the soil from which weeds grow in various places.
