How often do loganberries have to be watered?

The bushes do not need a lot of water. It is enough to water them from time to time when it is very dry. On the other hand, even slightly damp soil does no harm as long as there is no waterlogging.

Do loganberries need regular fertilizers?

In very poor soil, you can occasionally spread some ripe compost around the bushes. Commercially available Berry fertilizer(€ 11.35 at Amazon *) are not necessary.

In the fall it is recommended if you have some compost or Horn shavings(€ 32.93 at Amazon *) rake very lightly into the ground.

Old tendrils are cut off above the ground after the harvest.

In autumn, cut out dried up or diseased tendrils and thin young shoots that are too close together.

Do loganberries need a climbing aid?

The tendrils of the loganberry grow very quickly and can be a good five meters long. You should therefore tie the shoots to a climbing aid so that the fruits do not lie on the ground later.

You can also look after the bushes on the trellis. The distance between the plants should then be at least two meters.

Can loganberries be transplanted?

Transplanting is easier than with raspberries or blackberries. Loganberries have virtually no runners, so it is easier to dig the whole plant out of the ground.

What diseases affect the bushes?

Loganberries are robust. However, if the site conditions are poor, the bushes can suffer from some diseases. Essentially the same as raspberries:

  • Rod rot
  • Root rot
  • Focal spot disease

Cut off infected rods completely and dispose of them with household waste. To prevent fungal infestation, light the bushes so that the air can circulate well.

Unlike raspberries and blackberries, the fruits of loganberries rarely go moldy.

Are loganberries hardy?

Loganberries can withstand temperatures down to minus 18 degrees. Light winter protection is recommended in unprotected locations.

Tips & Tricks

Loganberries ripen earlier than raspberries and blackberries. They are easy to transport, but should be eaten or made into jam as quickly as possible.
