Gladioli love the sun

The perfect location for the gladiolus is a warm, full sun and at the same time sheltered from the wind in the flower bed. Wind protection or tying to plant stems is important, as the long, slender flower stems tend to bend over. Alternatively, you can place the gladiolus in front of a fence plants and tie the shoots directly to the property line.

Avoid waterlogging

Gladiolus A lot of water evaporates from the large flowers and leaves and therefore has to be watered regularly, not just on hot days. However, waterlogging should be avoided as the onions, which are permanently exposed to moisture, quickly begin to rot.

In locations with clayey or compacted soils, you should therefore introduce a drainage layer of sand into each planting hole. Loosen the soil deeply so that the water can drain well.

Tips

Make sure you have at least two-year onions to put. The small annual seed onions and the daughter onions of older tubers may sprout leaves, but do not yet flower.
