When is the best time to multiply?

Reeds are best in the spring after Cut back divided. Since you have previously cut back the leaves, the division is much easier.

Divide the reeds

  • First cut the dried leaves down to just above the ground.
  • Then separate with a Pickaxe or a sharp one spade part of the plant and dig it up.
  • Don't worry if you hurt the roots in the process.
  • Plant the separated part in the new location. Make sure you have a To set root lock.

Use root parts

Instead of severing part of the plant, you can simply dig up a piece of the root and plant it in another location. In this case, it may take a few more weeks for your reed to appear, but don't worry: it won't be long in coming.

Propagate via seeds

If you like things a little more complicated or want to test your gardening skills, you can collect the reed seeds in late summer and in seed trays in early spring sow. Alternatively, you can also buy the seeds online or from specialist retailers. If the plants are big enough and no more frost is to be expected, you can plant out your young reeds.
