This is how you can store fennel

There are several ways to store fennel:

  • in the refrigerator
  • in the basement
  • in the freezer

Apart from the latter variant, it is advisable to keep fennel as short as possible, i.e. to consume it relatively quickly. After a few days it begins to gradually dry out and become woody. This means that it soon loses its aroma and also changes its consistency.

Store fennel in the refrigerator

Wrap your fennel in cling film and then place it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. The foil protects it from drying out (quickly).

Alternatively, you can dampen the bulbous plant lightly with water (by spraying with a spray bottle) and then wrap it in kitchen paper before putting it in the refrigerator.

In both versions, the fennel stays fresh for about one to two weeks. In many cases it is still edible afterwards. However, it then already has significantly fewer vitamins and you have to cut away the shriveled outer leaves of the tuber.

Store fennel in the cellar

Remove the green from the fennel bulb and put the latter in a prepared box with moistened sand. You then move the whole thing to the basement, provided that it is dry. This is how you can store fennel for several weeks.

Store fennel in the freezer

If you would like to significantly extend the shelf life of your fennel bulb, simply freeze it. Our step-by-step guide explains how:

  1. Wash and clean the fennel thoroughly.
  2. Cut the vegetables into smaller pieces (the way you plan to use them later).
  3. Blanch the fennel pieces in lemon water for three to five minutes.
  4. Briefly frighten the vegetables in ice water.
  5. Drain the pieces in a colander.
  6. Carefully dry the fennel with kitchen paper.
  7. Fill the pieces into freezer bags in portions.
  8. Seal the bags airtight.
  9. Transfer the freezer bags to the freezer.

Fennel can be kept for at least six months.

Tips

You can also freeze fennel raw. In that case, just skip the blanching and frightening in ice water. However, fennel will taste better later if you have blanched it before freezing it.
