This will tell you that the hemp palm needs to be repotted

As soon as roots grow out of the bottom of the pot, it is time to repot the hemp palm. Even if the palm appears to be pushing itself out of the container, it needs a new pot.

When is the best time to repot the hemp palm?

The best time to repot is early spring. Check whether the hemp palm needs to be repotted when you take it out of winter quarters.

Choosing the right pot

Hemp palms form very long tap roots. The pot for a hemp palm should therefore be deeper rather than wide. A slim shape is more advantageous. Make sure, however, that the bucket has a good stand and does not tip over easily.

There must be one or more drainage holes at the bottom so that irrigation water can drain off and no waterlogging occurs.

It is advisable to create a drainage made of sand or gravel in the bottom of the pot.

Which substrate is suitable?

You can use normal garden soil as a substrate, which you then cover with some gravel, sand, Quartz sand(€ 14.90 at Amazon *) or Lava granules(€ 14.00 at Amazon *) make water permeable.

Specific Palm soil is not required for hemp palms, as this type of palm is quite undemanding.

How to repot hemp palms

  • Pot the hemp palm
  • Shake off the old substrate
  • fill the new pot with fresh soil
  • Insert the hemp palm carefully
  • Fill in the soil and press carefully
  • water regularly
  • do not put in direct sunlight

The new pot should only be slightly deeper and wider than the old one.

Do not fertilize after repotting

After repotting, the hemp palm should not be used for several months fertilize. The fresh soil contains sufficient nutrients. With additional fertilizer there is a risk of over-fertilization.

Tips

A hemp palm that you can take outdoors planted out are very difficult to replant. Usually the palm trees are too big and the roots too deep in the earth. Find a suitable location right away, where the palm tree won't bother you later.
