Seal gaps in the wall

Hoverflies like to retreat into small crevices in the wall in winter. If you want to avoid a population in your garden, it is best to seal off small gaps as a preventive measure.

Prevent the hoverflies

Hover flies feed on aphids and other small animals. By killing the pests on your plants with home-made sprays, you are robbing the hoverfly of its food shortages. The insects will then look for another place.

Avoid attractive plants

There are many different plants that are particularly attractive to the hover fly. This includes:

  • Carrots
  • dill
  • chervil
  • Marigolds
  • Knapweed
  • Daisies
  • Asters
  • and sun hat

Yellow daisy and early bloomers in particular attract the hover fly to your garden. Therefore choose an alternative planting.

Combating does not always make sense

However, you should know that hover flies are extremely useful in your garden. In agriculture, they are even used as natural pest control in greenhouses in winter. Namely, on their menu

  • Aphids
  • Sawfly
  • Spider mites
  • and scale insects

Hoverflies look like wasps, but they do not have a sting and are therefore very harmless. So think carefully about whether you would rather tolerate a population in your garden and use the above measures to lure the hover fly into the garden.
