Share cloves

Cloves age within a few years very quickly and then turn an unsightly brown from below - quite apart from the fact that the bloom also subsides. For this reason, the clove pad should be rejuvenated every three to four years by dividing it. Cloves are very easy to divide, even the smallest pieces grow back reliably and quickly form new, dense cushions. A division can be carried out throughout the summer until the beginning of September at the latest.

  • Loosen up with one spade or one Digging fork the floor around the upholstery well.
  • Now carefully lift the cloves and their roots out of the ground.
  • Carefully examine the roots for any damaged or diseased areas
  • and remove them.
  • Gently pluck the plants and roots apart with your hands.
  • Plant the individual plants again.
  • Because carnations are hardy the young plants can go outdoors right there and then.

Propagate cloves by cuttings

The propagation of carnations by cuttings is also very successful, the best time for which is in June and July.

  • For this, choose young shoots that are about six to eight centimeters long.
  • Cut this off right at the base.
  • Flowering or budding shoots are unsuitable as they have too little power to take root.
  • Plant the cuttings in pots filled with sand.
  • A mixture of peat and sand is also suitable.
  • Slightly moisten the substrate.
  • Keep the humidity high up to the roots,
  • for example, by placing the pots in an indoor greenhouse
  • or cover with a translucent film.

The cuttings will develop their first roots after about six weeks and can then be transplanted.

Sow carnations

Unless the plants not pruned after flowering they usually sow themselves very reliably. You can also sow the (collected or purchased) seeds yourself, either directly in August or September or in preculture between February and April. Cloves are cold germs and therefore need a cold period to break through the germ inhibition.

Tips

Carnations grown from seeds bloom only timidly in the first year, but will make up for this in the second year.
