The right time

Cut back the conifer in a pyramid shape

It is not enough just to cut off the top of the conifer and hope for the best - the result will look extremely ugly for years to come. Instead, it has proven useful to cut back the tree according to its natural growth habit - often pyramidal in the case of conifers. So the result is not too drastic and the tree remains aesthetic. Proceed as follows:

• As a first step, shorten the tree as desired.
• Cut straight to a branch at a right angle.
• Select two strong guide branches and tie them together vertically upwards.
• You should form the new top.
• Then cut back all side branches.
• They should get longer and longer from top to bottom.
• But only cut on the new shoots this year.
• Old shoots often no longer sprout, which is why a gap remains there after a cut.

One to two years after cutting, remove the weaker of the two new tree branches, the stronger one remains as the new tip.
