Bulbs: hidden in the ground waiting to be planted

Of the Ornamental onion like many other leek plants, it produces bulbous bulbs. With the help of this, the plant can be propagated in a targeted manner. The bulbs are usually in the ground and right next to the Mother onion. Some species also develop their bulbs on the surface.

First you need to get the bulbs out of the ground. This is best done in autumn, when you have cut down the plant beforehand. Use a spade to pry the mother onion out of the ground.

The brood onions usually adhere to the mother onion. They developed over the summer. For propagation it is important that these bulbs are plump, white and firm. Simply separate the bulbs from the mother onion.

Plant in a new location

Now the bulbs are planted in a different location. Please note the following:

  • sunny to partially shaded location
  • permeable, loose, nutrient-rich soil
  • Distance of at least 15 cm
  • Planting depth: 10 to 15 cm
  • insert with the point up and the roots down

Raise the seeds for sowing

the Ornamental onion seeds are small, black, smooth, slightly shiny and irregularly shaped. They look like the seeds of regular vegetable onions. the sowing is generally not very widespread, as it is much more complex than propagation using the brood bulbs.

Disadvantages of this method

The disadvantage of this method is that it takes a long time for the seeds to develop into large plants with strong bulbs. In addition, with bad luck, it takes longer than 3 months for the seeds to germinate. They are cold germs. It also takes 2 to 3 years for the first flower to bloom.

Seeding procedure

First of all, the seeds need a warm and humid period. For this you can z. B. harvest in late summer and place in a glass bowl, wrapped in damp kitchen paper. After about 4 weeks, the seeds and paper towels are put in the refrigerator. After 6 to 8 weeks of waiting, the seeds will return to normal Sowing soil sown.

Self-sowing: Simply leave the flowers to stand

Not infrequently it sows hardy Ornamental onion by itself without any action. To do this, you should leave the bloomed flower stalks in the summer. The seeds overwinter on the ground and germinate in spring.

Tips

You would not need to sow the seeds as soon as you have collected them. They can also be stored in the refrigerator until next spring. There they keep their ability to germinate well.
