A seat screened off by climbing plants

Delimited by trellises, there is a seat where you can read or enjoy your coffee undisturbed. Opt for a stable climbing aid, because it has to support the weight of the plants for many years. The elements should be constructed in such a way that the plants are able to grow not only in height, but also in width, depending on the species. As a result, the climbing artists cover the entire construction over time and this becomes a very decorative design element.

For creepers, the shoot of which grows vertically upwards and which is in a circle around a suitable one Looping the object, simple plant sticks made of hardwood, which you put in the ground not too far away, are sufficient put. Climbing plants with or without adhesive discs, on the other hand, need climbing fences with grids that ensure a stable hold.

A great selection of trellis can be found at Holzland.

Which plants are suitable?

Since climbing plants should thrive for a long time in the chosen place, you should choose them carefully.

Popular climbers are:

Art Brief description

honeysuckle The flowers give off a bewitchingly sweet scent. Grows in the sun and in the Penumbra in nutrient-rich, well-drained substrate.
Climbing hydrangea Enchants with flowers up to 25 centimeters wide. Prefers partial shade and well drained, humus-rich soil.
Climbing rose These usually only need to be cut once a year. They need a lot of sun and a humus-rich, loamy substrate.
Knotweed Enchants with dense clouds of white flower panicles. Very undemanding.
Wild Wine Turns bright red in autumn and becomes an attractive eye-catcher in the garden. Undemanding.

Maintain trellis made of wood properly

If you opt for a plastic or metal climbing fence, it does not require any further maintenance after planting. This is a little different with wood, which fits very well into the garden thanks to its natural look.

It is best to renovate the trellis when you are cutting back the plants. Check that no struts are broken and replace them if necessary. A fresh coat of paint is necessary at regular intervals, depending on how the wood has been treated:

  • Thin-layer glazes are applied every three years,
  • Thick-layer glazes reapplied every 5 years.
  • If you have decided on an opaque paint, a new coat of paint must be applied after 7 years at the latest.

Tips

Tightly overgrown climbing fences offer shelter and food for many living beings. Birds like to nest in the branches of ivy or wild grapevine. Bumblebees and bees feast on the flowers. Beetles and spiders, which you support in the fight against vermin, find hidden shelter in the climbing plants.
