Why bumblebees are problematic in the nesting box

Due to the enormous expansion of humans, many birds lose their natural breeding grounds. Nest boxes still offer protection and are therefore gratefully accepted. With a nest box, you make a big contribution to bird protection. It is all the more annoying when bumblebees take away the animals' space. However, animal rights activists found out through experiments that the consequences of a nest box occupied by bumblebees are far more serious. The animals do not just turn out to be beneficiaries, as previously assumed, but drive away birds with their buzz. This can lead parents to leave the nest box early and their young to starve.

Consciously settle bumblebees

However, bumblebees are also useful animals that a functioning ecosystem cannot be imagined without. You may want to consciously keep bumblebees in your yard. There are also special Hummel nesting boxes that you can easily build yourself. Here are some tips:

  • offer nest boxes of different sizes, as the number of animals within a colony varies greatly
  • a domed roof drains rainwater better
  • spread newspaper on the floor so that the nest can be removed more easily later
  • fill your nest box with hay, moss, or upholstery wool
