Deciduous and evergreen varieties

The deciduous varieties of the elven flowers come mainly from the East Asian region. They will turn off their foliage in colorful shades in autumn. The evergreen varieties find their home in Europe and as far as the Middle East.

The large-flowered elven flower

The best-known species is probably the large-flowered one Elven flower. It's evergreen. It includes the following attractive varieties with their flower and leaf colors:

  • 'Rose Queen': Dark pink flowers, green leaves, flowers are reminiscent of orchids
  • 'Elf Queen': White flowers, brown-green leaves
  • 'Ruby Crown': Violet-red flowers, brown-green leaves
  • 'Lilofee': Pink-red to purple flowers, dark green leaves
  • 'Orange Queen': Light orange flowers, green leaves

The sulfur-colored elven flower

The sulfur-colored elven flower is also known as Epimedium versicolor 'Sulphureum'. Fully living up to its name, it captivates with sulfur-yellow flowers. Added to this are their reddish spring shoots and bronze-colored winter leaves.

The alpine elven flower

Another species is Epimedium alpinum (Alpine Elven Flower). In contrast to most of the other species, this one is also suitable for sunnier ones Locations and at times copes well with drought. The flowers are light purple with white spots inside. The evergreen foliage is dark green in color.

The red elven flower

The red elf flower is also very popular. Their foliage is deciduous to evergreen and tinged yellow to orange in autumn. What is special about it: It has red leaf veins. The clump-forming growth reaches a height of 25 cm. There are up to 30 white-pink to white-red colored single flowers per panicle.

Also interesting for hobby gardeners are:

  • Epimedium pubescens: 'Snowflakes' with white flowers

Tips

Regardless of what kind or variety it is, elven flowers are considered weak poisonous.
