The difference between passion fruit and maracuja
Often times the terms Passion fruit and maracuja how synonyms are used, but this is not entirely correct. The passion fruit belongs with hers edible seeds and the sour pulp in between also belongs to the genus of blooming passion flowers. However, passion fruit is a subspecies of passion fruit also known as grenadilla. While juice packaging with passion fruit often incorrectly uses the in ripe condition purple passion fruits are shown, ripe passion fruit are actually yellow to orange in color.

Origin and season for the passion fruit
The passion fruit is usually a bit more sour in taste than the purple passion fruit. Fruits with the right degree of ripeness also taste freshly spooned out of the skin and not only very good as juice. The main growing areas for passion fruit are like the place of origin in tropical latitudes. In this country, the passion fruit in the supermarket usually comes from the following countries:
- Mexico
- Venezuela
- Bolivia
- Ecuador
The sweet grenadilla is grown for more regional consumption but also occasionally in tropical areas in Africa, Asia, Australia and on various Pacific islands. Due to the widely scattered cultivation areas, imported fruits have come in this country year-round season.
Correctly assess the degree of ripeness of a passion fruit
In contrast to the purple passion fruits, ripe passion fruits cannot be recognized by the slight drying of the skin with dents and wrinkles. As a rule, passion fruit, which are still green on the outside, were harvested when they were clearly immature. Fully ripe passion fruit have a rich yellow hue and, given their size, feel rather heavy. Passion fruits that are too light are generally already overripe and therefore rather dried out. Since the yellow passion fruits are overall somewhat firmer than their purple relatives, a firm fruiting body is not a sign of immaturity in them.
