What should be considered when pouring Astrophytum?

As a desert plant, the astrophytum doesn't need a lot of water. Water the cactus moderately during the growth phase from spring to early autumn. Always let the substrate dry out before you water again.

Avoid waterlogging by all means. You must always pour off excess irrigation water immediately.

Pour with rainwater if possible. Cacti do not tolerate calcareous water.

How is Astrophytum fertilized?

Astrophytum is a frugal type of cactus that can get by with few nutrients. You are never allowed to freshly repotted plants fertilize. If the cactus has been in the substrate for a long time, give some liquid fertilizer at monthly intervals from April to the beginning of September.

When does an astrophytum have to be repotted?

The best time to repot is early spring. Check every year that the roots still have enough space in the pot. If the planter is still sufficient, gently shake off the old substrate and fill the pot with fresh soil before putting the cactus back in place.

If a larger pot is required, make sure the drain hole is large enough. Fill it with fresh substrate from a third of sharp sand or Perlite(€ 35.50 at Amazon *) and two thirds Potting soil.

What diseases and pests should you watch out for?

Root rot occurs when you keep the astrophytum too wet. Check back regularly for root lice tampering with the cactus.

Also occur as pests Spider mites, Mealybugs and thrips.

How do you care for Astrophytum in winter?

  • Place in a cool place at seven to ten degrees
  • Select the brightest possible place
  • water very sparingly
  • do not fertilize

After the winter break, you have to slowly get the Astrophytum used to direct sunlight again. At first only increase the watering quantities slowly.

Tips

During the growth phase, the Astrophytum likes normal room temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees. You are welcome to put it outside in the summer if you can provide a sufficiently sunny spot.
