Cut gladioli for the vase
Not all of the flowers on a gladiolus branch open at the same time. Wait before cutting for the vase, until the lower flowers have bloomed. This will allow the buds that are still closed to open safely for the next few days. You should pay attention to the following:
- If possible, cut in the morning for a long shelf life.
- Use a knife with a very sharp and clean blade.
- Put the stems in the water immediately to keep the flowers fresh.

So that the plant is not weakened too much, you should always leave three to four leaves. If you cut too deeply, you must expect that the gladiolus will no longer sprout in the following year.
Cut back after flowering
Are all Gladiolus grapes withered, first remove only the stem. It is important that the green remains on the plant so that the gladiolus can store nutrients and trace elements for the next growing season in the gladiolus bulb. Only when the green has completely yellowed can you cut the leaves back about ten to fifteen centimeters above the ground.
Tips
Would you like to be richly blooming Gladiolus in the garden, you should refrain from removing too many flower clusters for the vase. If you cut the flowers during the growing season, the bulb will not develop as well despite the remaining foliage. If the flower stalks are removed frequently, the gladiolus may not pop out at all.
