Most palm trees are non-toxic
Almost all "real" Palm species are harmless to cats or are classified as "probably non-toxic" as no serious cases of poisoning are known. Caution is advised with the "wrong" palms
Many plants that we call palms in German are not real palms at all. Among these are some plants that pose a great risk to cats. These are for example:
- Yucca palm (palm lily): It contains saponins, which can cause inflammation and other ailments.
- Madagascar palm: The succulent is one of the dog poison family and should therefore not be placed within the reach of animals.
- Cycad: The toxins in these houseplants cause cats to vomit and bloody diarrhea.
Tips
The following principle applies to keep house cats: prevention is the best protection. Plants that are not known to contain toxins do not belong in a cat household.
