Propagate bougainvillea using cuttings

The procedure for setting cuttings

In principle, the propagation of cuttings works with the bougainvillea like with other cultivated plants: A shoot is cut and placed in a nursery pot for its own rooting. With the bougainvillea, however, this does not work so easily. Above all, your cutting needs a lot of ground warmth - and that over a long period of time. Appropriate equipment is therefore required and also some perseverance.

Basic principle of bougainvillea cuttings propagation:

  • Cut the cuttings and let them take root in the seed tray
  • Requirements for rooting: A lot of heat and time

Step 1: cut and set the cutting

For the cuttings, choose a mature, but not yet lignified shoot of around 30 cm in length between the beginning of spring and mid-summer. You put this in a pot or a growing bed that offers increased soil warmth. The bougainvillea cuttings need around 30 to 35 ° C for rooting. So underfloor heating is practically indispensable.

Rooting powder

To induce rooting is a hormonal one Rooting powder also very helpful. Simply add it to the substrate.

Create a microclimate

A warm, humid microclimate is also beneficial for its development - so ideally you should put it in a mini greenhouse. If you don't have one, you can simply cover it with foil instead.

Step 2: keep it moist and warm - and wait

You need a lot of patience for the rooting - it can take several months. During this time, you have to continuously maintain the warm and sheltered climate - so here you have to stay on the ball.

Step 3: harden and transplant

If the rooting is finally successful, you should immediately prepare the cutting for an independent life. That means gradually hardening it. Start to expose it to stronger light and shadow fluctuations and also to larger temperature differences. However, do not proceed too brutally, but increase the new challenges step by step. When you have the impression that the cutting has become strong enough, transplant it into its own pot. It can now continue to thrive here.
