This glass shape is what counts
There are decorative amaryllis glasses available from specialist shops that are specially shaped for the forcing. Before you pull out your wallet, have a look around the house to see if you already own a similarly proportioned vessel. It has a bulbous lower part and an hourglass-like constriction that opens upwards in the shape of a bowl.
Instructions for Amaryllis Forcing
October or November is the best time to position the flower bulbs in the glass. In a bright location at normal room temperatures, you can look forward to a splendid bloom after 4 to 6 weeks. Before you start, please put on gloves, as the onion is very poisonous is. This is how it works:
- Pour boiled water into the bulbous part
- A little bit of charcoal as an addition prevents rot
- Place the Ritterstern onion in the bowl
Please make sure that there is a gap of 5-6 cm between the water level and the flower bulb. Every day you can watch live how the roots grow into the water. If the liquid becomes cloudy, replace it.
Repot after flowering
An onion can only perform the impressive spectacle of a knight's star blossom in a glass once in its life. In the following years the amaryllis thrives vitally and with abundant flowers in normal substrate. At the end of the flowering period, put half of the tuber in a mix of flower and Cactus soil and cut off the withered flowers.
Tips
To give a knight's star in the glass more stability, insert a few twigs. The flower stem can lean against this and remain in balance. At the same time, you create a decorative appearance when the dark wood contrasts with the bright flower colors.
