The advantages of a thermal composter
- Thermal composters require much less space than a classic compost heap or a heap. They are therefore ideal for small gardens and can even be placed on a balcony or terrace.
- Since the containers are closed, everything looks pleasantly tidy.
- Due to the lid and the high temperatures inside, there is almost no odor development.
- Protective grids on the underside prevent mice and rats from getting to the contents of the composter.
- You can easily remove the finished fertilizer through the large flap on the underside.
Another advantage is the quality of the fertiliser: Quick or mulch compost is produced in the thermal composter. This contains significantly more nutrients than the mature compost produced in the open rotting.

Ideal size and site conditions
The containers of the thermal composter usually have a capacity of 400 to 900 liters. This volume is optimal for gardens between 100 and 400 square meters.
The compost bin should be placed on a flat surface in a partially shaded area so that the bottom has good contact with the
garden floor has. This allows earthworms and other beneficial animals to easily migrate into the compost. Why does garden waste rot so quickly in the thermal composter?
The composting process is accelerated by the special structure of these containers:
- Depending on the variant, the thermal composter is insulated or double-walled. In this way, the heat is kept inside and the microorganisms find optimal conditions. Temperatures of up to 70 degrees occur, at which even seeds and weeds are reliably decomposed.
- Thermo composters have a ventilation system that promotes air circulation. This ensures that sufficient oxygen is available.
The disadvantages of the thermal composter
The compost bins have a fairly manageable filling volume and are therefore more suitable for smaller gardens. If you have a lot of organic waste, the thermal composter can be combined very well with other methods. This is recommended, for example, if you regularly want to compost large quantities of clippings.
The containers, mostly made of weather-resistant plastic, are more expensive to buy than other composting methods. Good content rotting also requires some supervision. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for filling and care, because only then will the organic substances decompose in the desired short time.
Tip
There are also a few things to consider when filling the thermal composter. In order to avoid fermentation, it is important that there is about an equal amount of wet and dry material in the container. Chop up all materials well so that the composting can proceed quickly and easily.
