Planting callas is no art. Nevertheless, you should know the growth and rest phases of tropical plants, because these have an influence on the time of planting. We clarify: this is the best time to plant Callas.
Note the flowering time
There are a total of eight species that belong to the genus Zantedeschia. They are characterized by different flowering times, which can extend from late winter to spring, or reach their peak in summer. After the calla has flowered, it retreats into its subterranean rhizome. Since the species are native to the tropical regions, they are not based on the seasonal sequence. The change between rainy and dry seasons is crucial for growth and rest phases. This aspect has a decisive influence on the planting time.
Fall planting for indoor callas
If the calla as a potted plant is to beautify your home, choose autumn as the planting time. Place the rhizomes in a bucket with fresh soil so that the substrate is at least ten centimeters thick. Several tubers feel comfortable in one container, provided the distance between them is the same as an onion. When planting, you should consider the following aspects:
- Planting in a pot makes sense when the arum plant has just sprout
- Planting during the flowering period makes sense
- after flowers have wilted, autumn planting is not recommended
Place flower bulbs
If you would like to prepare your calla for planting outdoors instead, you should store the tubers in a cool, dry place after the leaves have moved in. Do not dig up until the plant has stored its energy reserves in the underground rhizome. The arrow-like leaves with their long stems wither completely. Now you can clean and overwinter the rhizomes. Your planting calendar starts in the new year:
- Grow bulbs in pots with nutrient-poor soil from January
- in March in humus and nutrient-rich soil
- In principle, tubers can be cultivated all year round
Note: When placing the onion in the substrate, you need to pay attention to the correct orientation. The rounded side faces down while the tip faces up.
Plant in the flowerbed
The popular ornamental plants with their interesting inflorescences, that of a mostly white bract are enveloped, are very sensitive to frost and are therefore mainly used as potted plants cultivated. In the summer months, the plants can also be planted in the garden. This approach is recommended primarily for mild regions. In order to find the right time for planting out, you should consider these aspects:
- Put outside at the earliest when the first leaves sprout
- Plant out when there is no longer any risk of frost
- do not put in the bed before the end of April
- the ideal planting time is at the end of May
Tip: You can also sink your Zantedeschia together with the planter in the flowerbed. This makes digging easier in autumn, when you have to move the exotic plant to winter quarters.
