Which paper is suitable?

Glossy printed brochures and magazines are not suitable, only the daily newspaper or cardboard. This material ensures a weed-free bed for about one to two years, which you hardly have to worry about any more. It rots in an environmentally friendly way and therefore does not represent a burden on the soil.

How should the newspaper be distributed?

Always use multiple layers of paper. A single page of the newspaper would be too thin and the wild plants would quickly puncture it. If you have chosen cardboard, a single layer is sufficient because of the thicker material.

When laying out, proceed as follows:

  • Loosen the earth and thoroughly free from all weeds and their roots.
  • Spread the newspaper in several layers on the bed. The leaves should overlap a little.
  • Moisten the paper well. As a result, it lies close to the earth.
  • Distribute the plants to be planted and check whether you like the bed design.
  • You can easily pierce the paper with the planting shovel. However, be careful not to make the holes too big so that no wild plants can settle here.
  • After setting, cover the weed barrier with bark mulch, wood chips or a thin layer of substrate.

If the bed is already planted, you can remove some soil, remove the weeds mechanically and then distribute the moistened newspaper between the useful or ornamental plants. In this case, too, the material comes with a layer Mulch(€ 239.00 at Amazon *) or covered substrate.

What are the alternatives?

If you don't have enough newspaper or cardboard, you can A special fleece from the gardening trade as a weed barrier use. However, this is more expensive than paper, which is a waste product in many households anyway.
