A division of the rhizome is particularly useful if one or more of the following points are present:
- Location has proven unsuitable
- Plants are sick all the time
- Flowering becomes weaker from year to year
- Plant should increased will
The ideal time: autumn
Divide your peonies when they are in their dormant phase. Then they can cope best with this procedure. The resting phase begins around August / September. You should have done the split by October. You can recognize the onset of rest by the fact that the foliage of the Peony turns yellow.
Divide the plant correctly
First of all, the yellowed foliage should be removed. After that, carefully dig out the peony. You can use a
Digging fork or one spade. After digging, remove thick balls of earth by hand and wash the rhizome with water (e. B. using a garden hose). Then it is easier to see where exactly the branches and buds are.Now the plant is divided:
- with a spade or sharp knife
- each section at least 3 buds
- a maximum of 7 buds per section
- at new location plant
On the new Location The correct planting depth now counts. Peonies are planted with their buds 2 to 3 cm (maximum 4 cm) deep. Otherwise they will be lazy to flower. Water the plant well and protect it with brushwood in the first winter!
Tips
In contrast to peasant peonies, which also sprout from ’sleeping buds, precious peonies and Chinese peonies only sprout from the reddish buds that are already visible. Take this into account when dividing!
