Is it even worth it to propagate a mountain palm yourself?

It is a tedious affair to propagate a mountain palm yourself. It can take several months for the seed to germinate. It takes a lot of patience to grow a small mountain palm.

Since mountain palms are quite cheap in the trade, it is only worthwhile for real palm fans to propagate these palms themselves.

Harvest or buy seeds yourself

You can find seeds for mountain palms in stores, sometimes in other than the usual varieties.

Mountain palms, however, already bloom indoors after two to three years. If you want to harvest seeds, you will need several plants as the mountain palm is either female or male.

If your palms are in bloom, use a brush to stroke the inflorescences several times to fertilize them. If the blossoms are dried up, the seeds form in it. They are ready for harvest when they are black or when they are falling off.

Water seeds before sowing

The seed of the mountain palm has a very hard shell. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for at least 48 hours before sowing them.
